OSHA has revised its Hazard Communication Standard to align with the United Nations Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals. Two of the more significant changes in the revised standard are the use of new labeling elements and a standardized format for Safety Data Sheets (formerly known as MSDS). The new label elements and the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) requirements will improve worker understanding of the hazards associated with the chemicals in their workplace. OSHA is phasing this in over several years. The first deadline was December 1, 2013. By this time you should have received training in the new labeling elements such as product identifiers, the signal words DANGER and WARNING, the 8 pictograms that will be used, as well as hazard and precautionary statements that will be used on the new labels. You should have also received training on the format of the new Safety Data Sheets (SDS).

For those of you who have not been trained, we are offering this HAZARD COMMUNICATION training several times in each area of the state. Last year we offered this training in conjunction with other classes you were attending. We will do the same this year. That means if you are signed up for any class you will as part of that class receive Hazard Communication training also. It will not be necessary for you to attend a separate Haz Com class.

The important thing is you need to understand the new labeling elements and the new formats for Safety Data Sheets (SDS).

IF YOU HAVE NOT BEEN TRAINED, PLEASE ATTEND!
